Up Close (Part 2)

Tomorrow is THE DAY!

The vibe is getting stronger and boy, do we feel it? Like nothing else in the world!

Taking off where the last close-up left, we will take a closer look on two more teams competing in this season of SFL; the deadly Red Phoenix and the mighty two-times champions, Subang Rascal.

You are not going to regret spending your time reading this.

Red Phoenix

Through out the off-season, this team has been one of the most consistent teams; they have managed to maintain their training sessions through out the off-seasons. This, I must say, is a very hard objective to achieve as most players will usually have problems when it comes to gathering the whole team to have proper training sessions. Kudos to the whole team!

We were given the privilege to interview the coach of the team, the former president of the Selangor Floorball Association, Mr Hafidz himself.

When asked about the current situation about the whole team, he mentioned that the Red Phoenix will definitely be one of title contenders for this season as they have managed to improve a lot during the off-season. This statement is not based on empty talks as they have played a few friendly matches and managed to win most of them (they have won against Gang Bintang in a friendly match not so long ago, for crying out loud!)

"The Legend Killer," is what Mr.Hafidz mentioned when he was asked to describe the team in its current form. With a statement such as this, it would be wise for all teams in the league to not take the Red Phoenix lightly when the comes for them to cross path.

Will they be starting their killing spree on their opening game this Saturday? Come down to Kompleks Sukan Rakan Muda, Puchong and see for yourself whether this team are able to keep up with the claims from the Coach himself.

Red Phoenix will be facing Gang Bintang from 3.00-5.00 pm this Saturday.

Subang Rascal

There is nothing much to say about this club, really, except that maybe these giants are even more hellbent than ever in defending the Cup that they have won for two years in a row now. Rumour has it that the players from the past are coming to join their crusade in defending their title.

We have been given a chance to interview the skipper of Subang Rascal, Mr.Sjaiful.

Confirming the rumour mentioned before, he stated, " This will be a reunion for Subang Rascal as our old players are coming back to join us and help us in our bid to retain the trophy."

He also added, " We are also merging with some former players of the Hornets for this season. Things will definitely get more interesting from now on."

They are definitely determined to keep their title as 'Champions' of this season.

We are sure that people are getting more eager to take a peek on this team's performance this season. So come along to the Kompleks Sukan Rakan Muda, Puchong and see for yourself whether the Rascals are as mighty as they have been during the previous season of SFL.

Subang Rascal will be facing ZAP Floorball Club in what we could predict as the clash of the titans this Saturday from 1.00 - 3.00 pm.

Stay tuned as we bring you more exciting updates!

Up-Close (Part 1)

T-minus two days!

We hope all participating teams are thrilled to begin their vie for the honor of being Champions of the 2014 Selangor Floorball League (SFL).

To entice what is deemed a spectacular season ahead of us, we touched base with a couple of representatives from three participating clubs.

Enjoy!

Gang Bintang Floorball Club
Achieving an amazing feat by being crowned Champions of the first two SFLs, Gang Bintang Floorball Club’s moniker is sure to send chills down the spines of newly establish clubs. Renowned for their ruthlessness on the court with terrific stick work from a number of notable players, we got in touch with the club’s skipper, Jethro Wong for some thoughts on the upcoming league.

With an aim of completing a top-2 finish this season, Gang Bintang has always been one to watch as major title contenders. When queried about their closest rivals, it was always going to be obvious that Subang Rascals Floorball Club would be their greatest obstacle in their bid to recapture the Champion’s title. That being said, Jethro also mentioned that Salibandy!Co Floorball Club would be the next closest rival to stand in their way of the crown.

In regards to the new implications of the new rules this season, Jethro said, “The new rules will definitely test players' commitment to the league. In previous seasons, we see teams who only field 5-8 players in a match, teams from colleges can field a full team especially during semesters, while they had limited players during semester breaks. So, the new rules will definitely give this season a fresh new challenge, both physically and mentally. And my advice for players would be to balance their time out and ensure they are fully committed to the club during the season.”

There is no doubt, that Gang Bintang Floorball Club would be one to keep a close eye on. Gang Bintang will take on Red Phoenix this Saturday from 3.00pm – 5:00pm.

ZAP Floorball Club
Established in 2014 and being a newly registered team to the Selangor Floorball League, ZAP Floorball Club has been the talk of floorballers in Selangor as of late. Made up of a good mix of players mainly from the dissolved Gracebandy!Co and some Universiti Malaya students, we caught up with club manager Tan Yinn Wayne and coach Gary Lee as we were quite keen to discover more about the new club on the block.

When enquired about their club’s expectations, Coach of ZAP Floorball Club, Gary Lee said, “This is our first time participating in the league (under the ZAP banner), no expectation, no pressure. We have been telling our players to go on court and do their best, nothing to lose.”

Also stating that the Selangor Floorball League is a tight one, they did not disclose a particular rival in the table. What they gave us was, “if we have to pick one, probably another new team like us?” - which puzzled us, as they are the only new team this season.

ZAP Floorball Club also hoped that the new implementation of the rules would complement the ever exciting SFL.

From what we’ve managed to derive of ZAP so far, this team could be out to surprise the giants of SFL as they seem to be still keeping their tricks up their sleeves. We’ll have a clearer picture come Saturday (1.00pm – 3.00pm), when they take on defending champions Subang Rascals, from what could be a clash of the titans.

Salibandy!Co Floorball Club
This club is one that has been through thick and thin, having been around since the first season of the Selangor Floorball League. Salibandy!Co has been impressive over the past couple of seasons however, are still unable to get their hands on the trophy. Will this finally be their season? We find out from Captain and Goalkeeper of Salibandy!Co, Colin Gan.

This year, Salibandy!Co has increased their squad’s capacity by a significant figure, with the inclusion of many new faces with different skill sets. When queried about the club’s expectations this season, we were told that Salibandy!Co wants to see the team working hard together, and playing as a team. Beyond that, they also hoped that their players would mature in their behavior and conduct, as individuals.

On the new implementation of the rules, Colin said, “I personally think it’s good for all the clubs and for the league, but it’s always easier said than done. I would like to see how these rules are strictly implemented this season, especially when it comes to the punctuality of each club. If these rules are implemented well, then we will definitely see a new and improved SFL that is greatly respected by everyone.”
With Gang Bintang named as their closest rivals in the league, Salibandy!Co should be gunning for a top two finish as well. They take on GMI White Knights this Saturday, from 5.00pm – 7.00pm.

**********************

If you desire to know more about the sport, here’s an open invitation to you to come experience the game from the sidelines. Games will run from 1.00pm – 7.00pm at Rakan Muda Sports Complex, Puchong. See you there!

Glancing at the 2014 Selangor Floorball League

The dawn of the 2014 Selangor Floorball League (SFL) is right around the corner for the six (6) participating teams. With the official kick-start set to take place this weekend, the fifth inception of the SFL has undoubtedly all the potential to be one of the most fascinating floorball leagues in the association's history.

Here're three reasons why:

1. The league is condensed into just, one month (full schedule)
  • The structure of a short schedule is definitely expected to keep all participants on their toes. Week in week out they would need to be physically fit, strident on the court, precise in their tactics and most of all, being able to retain the passion and endurance of the team.

 2. Each team will only face each other once (That's why the league only lasts a month)
  • This makes every point count, every goal crucial, and every defeat unacceptable. The mounting pressure might prove overwhelming for teams with high expectations, and it would be interesting to watch how they keep their act together as individuals, and as a team.

 3. Stringent rules deployed over the past few weeks by the SFL organizing committee will require teams to escalate their discipline and commitment. Some notable ones include:
  1. Teams are required to register a 23-man squad for the league
  2. Teams need to have a minimum of 9 players (including a fully-equipped goalie) on the court upon the commencement of the game
  3. Revocation of ability to reschedule game times gratis. Penalty varies accordingly should organizing committee be informed before 78 hours or within 78 hours of the scheduled game

What’re your thoughts? Would it be a balanced mouth-watering season to look forward to?
